Managing Foxes in the Landscape

FOXES – a threat to livestock and pets as well as wildlife including 14 species of birds, 48 mammals, 12 reptiles and 2 amphibians, in fact anything up to 5.5 kgs in weight. An invasive species, well adapted to a variety of habitats, including in the Lockyer.

Dennis Gannaway of Bellden Environmental Services presented a “Managing FOXES in the landscape” workshop on Sunday 20th October, at Ma Ma Creek Community Hall, Gatton Clifton Road. Attendees learned about the life cycle and habits of the fox, why it’s important to manage foxes at a landscape level and fox management techniques. Dennis covered all the management options, their efficacy, cost effectiveness and target specificity and, most importantly, their humaneness in terms of animal suffering.

Dennis was accompanied by one of his amazing detection dogs, Halo a nine-year old Springer Spaniel, who was recently deployed to find foxes and fox dens in central Queensland at turtle nesting sites. Using a target (fox tail), Dennis and Halo demonstrated how a detection dog works with their handler to locate evidence of a target species.
